Ways of Communicating
NITIE was established by the Government of India in 1963. One of the perks of being a college this senior is its rich alumni network. Today, one of our alumni, Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni, graced us with his presence. Nikhil co-founded Darwin Tech in 2016 after quitting a job in a highly sought after domain, consulting.
In today's session, he emphasized on the importance of proper communication. He started with his rich experience in the consulting industry. In this industry, it is not just verbal communication that matters but also pictorial, graphical and written communication does. Some of the tools that can be used to communicate ideas are MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, etc. Like the way different type of clothes are suitable for different occasions, these tools too are most suitable to convey a particular set of information. For instance, one should use MS PowerPoint for proposals whereas for financial reports, excel should be preferred. Today's technology gives us a plethora of ways to present our ideas, it's up to an individual to make the most of it.

During our evolution on Planet Earth, we started drawing and imagining things long before we started writing words and thus, our brains are programmed such that they are attracted to images more quickly than to the words. Along the same lines, Nikhil advised us to include more pictures and graphs rather than words and sentences in our communication channel to catch the recipient's attention. Moreover, images have the capability to contain more information. Try conveying the amount of information that a map does in just words.
Personal Branding:
In this era of "gig economy", one needs to market oneself to stay ahead of the curve. People should know you for your uniqueness or the kind of value that added. People should know your potential. Marketing oneself is what Nikhil terms as personal branding. He gave examples of how some of NITIE's alumni are building their own personal brand. He mentioned Trell and a product manager who provided supply of unique content in the field of her expertise and thus made a mark.

Glad to see that the course of Business Communication is connecting us with such amazing Alumni
